Poderi Aldo Conterno was founded in 1961, when Aldo Conterno bought the Favot estate. Prior to this event, he and his brother Giacomo had managed the famous family estate for nearly 10 years. Aldo left over stylistic differences. While Giacomo wanted to continue his father's orthodox even classical line, Aldo considered himself a balanced modernist. He left and founded his own brand so he could mature wines in a combination of different barrels and flirt with the French school of winemaking. Aldo passed away in 2012. He passed away as one of the most important producers in the region. Today the estate is managed by his children: Franco, Stefano and Giacomo.
The producer owns about 20 hectares of cultivated land lying within the boundaries of the famous Bussia vineyard. From the fruit that grows there, the producer creates wines that show the character of several distinct habitats, while the wine named Bussia is based on fruit from slightly younger (15 years and older) vines growing on this crop.
2017 is a difficult vintage, which in addition came after the historically successful 2016, but the best producers can't take that as an excuse. And Borgogno definitely does not. The Bussia from this vintage is a lovely wine with all the qualities we look for in Barolo. Lots of body supported by firm tannins and carried by acidity. Cherries, earth, shattered stones, black pepper, dried flowers. On the one hand it is still developing in the glass, on the other the profile is close to a completely mature wine.
