Barolo, Piedmont

Winemaker and visionary, Domenico Clerico, founded his wine estate in the 1970s, very quickly making it one of the most important addresses in Barolo. Working at Monforte d'Alba, Domenico was one of the most important modernists, boldly proclaiming the need to introduce modern and internationally applicable techniques into the regions practice. Over time, however, many of the decisions regarding fermentation and aging of the wine have been reconsidered, and the choice of techniques today is no longer so clear-cut.
Clerico wines are known for their power, concentration and elegance. Shorter maceration and maturation in French barrels are the producer's hallmarks. The wines are sparkling, full of class and aromas of ripe fruit and sweet, intense spices. They are created with the idea of being approachable when young and having the potential for long maturation.
