Adriaen van Ostade,
1610 - 1685, successor to the
INTERIOR WITH PEASANT AT TABLE WITH WINE GLASS,
PIPE AND VIOLIN
Oil on canvas.
48.5 x 40 cm.
Red paint seal on verso.
The interior, deliberately kept dark, reveals a large fireplace in the background with other people in front of it. A waitress is attending to the men at the table, while a girl on the left is playing with a dog. The painting is in the popular tradition of peasant pieces, which were successfully cultivated by Teniers and Ostade in particular, but also by Adriaen Brouwer, a fellow pupil of Ostade.
