Biography
From 1887 to 1896, he studied at the Technical University of Munich; he also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under Leon Wyczółkowski and Józef Unierzyski. He continued his artistic studies from 1902 to 1904 at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, the Académie Julian in Paris (1904–05), and William Morris’s school in London. From 1930, he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. He was a member of the Polska Sztuka Stosowana (Polish Applied Art) society. He designed sets and costumes primarily for the J. Słowacki Theater in Kraków (1935–39) and the Polish Theater in Warsaw (1913–31). He popularized three-dimensional set designs in Polish theater. He created polychrome decorations in many Kraków churches and was also a co-designer of the interior of the Jama Michalika café in Kraków.
