The work presented here is one of two compositions in a series that Dalí titled “New Jerusalem Suite.” The first edition of this series was published in 1977 using the metal-based aquatint technique under his personal supervision, and only the first edition features hand-applied gilding on the composition. The second composition in the “New Jerusalem Suite” series is titled “The Messiah—Woman Leading Horse.” In the monumental catalog raisonné by Claus Michler and Reiner Löpsinger (M&L), this work is associated with the cycle titled “Les Amoureux.”
The print depicts a female figure leading a horse, set against a rich background full of messianic and mystical symbolism. The figure of the woman leading the horse introduces the themes of peace, hope, and the dawn of a new era, which directly alludes to the theme of the New Jerusalem.
