The figure of a bishop.
Drawing on paper, signed: "W.Eljasz 13/3 1875". Dimension in passe-partout: 23.5 x 17 cm (all in glass: 34.5 x 27 cm.
The figure depicted is a kneeling clergyman, probably a bishop or saint, dressed in richly decorated liturgical vestments (chasuble, mitre). He holds a pastoral in one hand and a martyr's palm in the other - which may suggest that he is a holy martyr. It is likely that this is a figure of St. Stanislaus the Bishop - patron saint of Poland and Krakow. Walery Eljasz was a Polish painter, illustrator and educator, known mainly for documenting the costume, architecture and customs of the highlanders and Polish monuments. He worked mainly in Krakow and Podhale. He often drew religious scenes, as well as historical ones. He was also the author of illustrations for books and newspapers. Traces of non. soiling and browning of paper. 10277/94
