Biography
An outstanding Polish painter and one of the most intriguing representatives of the so-called “École de Paris.” A student of J. Malczewski and T. Axentowicz at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, he continued his studies in Munich under Ažbe. In 1904, he worked and exhibited in Paris; with some interruptions—in 1910, he headed the painting department in Jerusalem, and in the years 1914–1918 he served in the First Brigade of the Polish Legions, maintaining constant contact with his homeland. In the 1990s, his work was brought back into the public eye through exhibitions at the National Museum in Warsaw—featuring the collections of Ewa and Wojciech Fibak, Bolesław and Lina Nawrocki, as well as the exhibitions “Kisling and Friends” and “Paris and Polish Artists, 1900–1918.” He was the younger brother of the painter Maurycy Gottlieb, born after his death.
