Color lithograph, Arjomari vellum paper; 30 x 18 cm (inside dimensions of the passe-partout) with dimensions of
60 x 40 cm; signed and dated on the plate, lower left: “19 01Raoul Dufy.” The lithograph is from a portfolio published
by Libraire Académique Perrin in Paris, titled “Homage to Raoul Dufy,” and produced by
Atelier Mourlot.
Dufy was fascinated by public scenes, celebrations, the social life of the elite, but also by life in
ports and at sea.
Dufy’s paintings always radiate light and joy. Even official scenes are
depicted with a certain lightheartedness and optimism. His works are dominated by bright,
rich colors—the blue of the sky and sea, the white of the sails, the red and gold of the flags. Dufy was a master of
line. The outlines of figures, ships, and details are drawn quickly and confidently, yet with lightness. The line
often do not perfectly enclose the form, and the color may “bleed” beyond it, creating an impression
spontaneity and dynamism. His versatility and unique style have made him one of
most recognizable artists of the 20th century.
