In the “Flordali” series of lithographs, Salvador Dalí combined many motifs characteristic of his work. His freedom in composing the images and his sensitivity to color contributed to the decorative nature of the works, which, in their form, represent the artist’s imaginative reinterpretation of botanical portraits of fruits. In the “Flordali – Les Fruits” series (1969), fantastical, anthropomorphized plants convey, among other things, humorous and erotic themes. Salvador Dalí saw fruit as a potential starting point for creating surrealist visions that tell complex stories. The entire series also features elements characteristic of Salvador Dalí’s painting, such as the eye motif, chicken legs, and a figure reminiscent of Don Quixote.
This playful anthropomorphization of plants and fruits has parallels in earlier periods of European art history, including the paintings of Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
Salvador Dalí’s works from the “Flordali – Les Fruits” series (1969) were produced in multiple editions, which differed in both print run and type of paper. It is worth noting that elements present in the “Flordali – Les Fruits” series (1969) were reused by Salvador Dalí in his later series of lithographs from the 1980s titled “Flordali II.”
