Stanisław Cholewa—born in 1973 in Bochnia. He is a graduate of the High School of Fine Arts in Nowy Wiśnicz. He studied at the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków in the screen printing studio of Prof. Wojciech Krzywobłocki, as well as at the Faculty of Art at the Pedagogical University of Kraków. He received his diploma in 2001 from the linocut studio of Assistant Professor Jan Bujnowski at the Pedagogical University. He earned his Ph.D. in 2009 at the Faculty of Graphic Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. He is currently a faculty member at the Pedagogical University in the Institute of Graphic Arts and Design. He is a member of the Kraków Branch of the Association of Polish Visual Artists. He has held seven solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Poland and abroad.
He works in printmaking, drawing, and painting. He primarily creates series, of which he has so far produced: Events, Situations, Here and Elsewhere, and Machines. In the first three series, the central theme of his work is the human being entangled in everyday life, interpreted in a grotesque manner with a touch of deliberate deformation. In the *Machines* series, he experimentally uses a perishable paper matrix based on a photocopy, combining it with classical methods of reproducing graphic images. His early prints were characterized by a documentary and descriptive nature. Over time, the artist has intervened in the method and form of graphic representation. He has created large-format prints that incorporate color. Existing, monumental machine-objects—and sometimes fragments thereof—are stripped of their superfluous surroundings. Placed in an imaginary space, they reveal peculiar forms resulting from their utilitarian functions.
