Yayoi Kusama (born March 22, 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan) - Japanese avant-garde artist, painter, sculptor and installation artist, considered one of the most important figures in contemporary art. Her work encompasses conceptual art, surrealism, pop art and minimalism, with her trademark dots and infinity motifs.
Kusama has struggled with hallucinations since childhood, which inspired her art. She studied traditional Japanese painting, but quickly turned to modern art. In 1957 she moved to New York, where she gained international fame for her happenings and immersive installations. Her works often deal with themes of obsession, female sexuality and the infinity of space.
After returning to Japan in 1973, she voluntarily took up residence in a psychiatric hospital, where she continues to create today. Her "Infinity Mirror Rooms" - rooms full of mirrors and light elements - are among the most recognizable works of contemporary art.
Her work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world, including the Tate Modern, MoMA and Centre Pompidou. Kusama is also an author of novels and poetry, and her influence on contemporary art is undeniable.
