38. ROUSSEAU JEAN JACQUES, Supplement a la Collection des oeuvres (...).
Geneva 1782, no publisher, 403 pp.
Supplement to Rousseau's posthumous works. Volume one of the supplement and the twenty-fifth of the Complete Works, containing primarily texts that are polemics and observations relating to the famous treatise on the sciences and arts. The treatise was presented by Jean-Jacques Rousseau to a competition announced by the Academy of Dijon. The text won first prize in that competition, and after its publication became the subject of lively discussion. This was the first text by Rousseau in which he strongly criticizes civilization and its achievements, proclaiming a return to nature as the original and best state of human life. One of Rousseau's main and first polemicists was King Stanislas Leszczynski. The treatise contains a bravura critique of Rousseau's text written by King Stanislas Leszczynski. In addition, the volume contains other polemics with Rousseau in connection with his treatise and other literary and scientific texts. An exceptional Polonik related to Stanislaw Leszczynski.
Period binding, full leather in db condition with some rubbing mainly at the corners; spine gilt and embossed with geometric and floral designs and title; interior in average condition, sometimes stains but dry; overall average condition.
