Habes in hoc volumine lector optime diuina Lactantii Firmiani opera

Venetiis 1509, Ioannis de Tridino

32 cm, [12] p., CLX p., XXII p.

Renaissance edition of the works of Lucius Cecilius Firmiani Lactante (ca. 250-ca. 325), one of the most important Christian apologists of antiquity, author of, among other works, Divinarum institutionum. The text has been carefully edited and revised based on earlier manuscripts, with the addition of Greek passages and commentaries by contemporary erudites.

The edition comes from the outhouse of Ioannis de Tridino in Venice, one of the renowned humanist printers of the early 16th century. It is an early surviving print representing an important stage in the reception of Christian literature in the Renaissance.

Piece in original period parchment binding preserved in very good condition.

The pages bear visible discoloration and signs of flooding, typical of 16th century old prints, but the text remains complete and legible. The edition is one of the very rare Renaissance old prints. Early editions of Lactante from the early 16th century appear sporadically on the antiquarian market.
