The book takes the form of a colorful account of noble life. It describes the daily life, customs, culture, and mindset of the Polish nobility and landed gentry in the 19th century. The author’s memoirs cover the period from the waning days of the Napoleonic era through the events of the Spring of Nations (1848).
The 1928 edition includes a foreword written by the well-known essayist and cultural historian Stanisław Wasylewski.
The publication is regarded as an excellent source of knowledge about the era, full of humor but also critical distance. The author’s style brings the past to life before the reader’s eyes, which sets this work apart from other, often monotonous memoirs from that period.
Published by Wydawnictwo Polskie, printed by Drukarnia Rolnicza in Poznań.
