Famous work by Jędrzej Kitowicz (1728-1804), priest, diarist, participant in the Bar Confederation.
The work comprehensively describes daily life and customs of various states in Poland in the mid-18th century during the reign of Augustus III Sas. In this way it goes beyond the convention of the time of describing history as the history of rulers and celebrities. The author discusses in detail material culture (clothing, equipment, vehicles, food, weapons) and behavior (family, official, daily, festive). The lecture is divided into thematic issues, such as faith, child rearing, the clerical state, the palestra, the military, court life. The detailed descriptions are conveyed in colorful language and include numerous anecdotes. Thanks to the Description of customs Kitowicz is sometimes regarded as one of the forerunners of Polish ethnography.
