This publication contains materials from the conference “Early Books and Their Owners—State of Research, Studies, and Prospects,” organized in 2016 by the Ossoliński National Institute in collaboration with the Consortium of European Research Libraries. The symposium focused on provenance research conducted in European academic, public, and ecclesiastical libraries. This research enables the reconstruction of historical book collections and allows for tracing the history of nearly every book and its social circulation.
The first volume contains articles devoted to provenance groups in the collections of early printed books at Poland’s largest libraries, as well as texts addressing issues related to the study and cataloging of incunabula.
Volume two includes texts devoted to book owners living in various eras (from the Middle Ages to the 19th century), as well as the results of research on church and monastic collections, Polish historical book collections held in Russia and Sweden, methods of cataloging historical collections in France, bookplates, and the antiquarian market for old prints.
