SPKL 190. Minor staining, browning of protective blotters at boards, nevertheless good condition. Preserved all tissue guards with printed titles in front of boards. Color plates, numerous single-color decorations in the text. One of the most beautifully published Polish illustrated books, and the novel for which Wladyslaw Reymont won the Nobel Prize in 1924. The book's graphic design is the joint work of Apoloniusz Kędzierski (1861-1939) and Zygmunt Kamiński (1888-1969). Kedzierski - a pupil of Brandt, Gerson and Aleksander Kaminski, an artist with great sensitivity and a penchant for color - prepared a series of 20 watercolors (landscapes and scenes of village life) reproduced on color plates. Kaminski, a student of Mehoffer among others, a painter, draughtsman and printmaker, designed the title page, initials and numerous graphic embellishments in the text with motifs taken from folk art. The works of both artists harmonize with each other. The book is beautifully printed, in large type, on good paper.
