A portfolio of 10 color caricatures by Stanisław Toegel (1905–1953)—a draftsman, caricaturist, and illustrator who participated in the Warsaw Uprising and, after its fall, was sent to Germany —depicting the crimes of the German occupiers in Poland: Gestapo activities, torture, executions, SS crimes, the persecution of the Jewish population, and the looting of works of art. The plates are accompanied by captions in Polish, English, and French. The drawings were created toward the end of the war, and the portfolio was published in 1946 by Antoni Markiewicz in a print run of 1,450 pieces. "Hitleriada macabra" is one of Toegel’s most poignant works—it combines the form of caricature with a direct testimony to the terror of the occupation.
