In Cold Blood is a non-fiction novel by American author Truman Capote, first published in 1966. It details the Clutter family murders, which occurred in 1959 in the small farming settlement of Holcomb, Kansas .
Capote learned of the quadruple murder before the killers were caught, and traveled to Kansas to write about the crime. Accompanied by his childhood friend and fellow writer Harper Lee , they interviewed residents and investigators assigned to the case and compiled thousands of pages of notes. The killers, Richard Hickock and Perry Smith , were arrested six weeks after the murders and later executed by the state of Kansas. Capote eventually spent six years working on the book.
In Cold Blood was an immediate commercial and critical success. Considered by many to be the prototype of the true crime novel, it is also the second best-selling book in the history of the genre, behind Vincent Bugliosi's Helter Skelter (1974) about the Charles Manson murders
