Mindaugas Skudutis (b. 1948) is a Lithuanian painter whose work combines an expressive emotional world, symbolic content and reflection on everyday life. He is considered to be one of the artists who experienced the transition from the Soviet period to the years of independence not only in social terms, but also in terms of his aesthetic world-view. His works are characterised by psychological depth, bold brushstrokes, intense atmosphere and often melancholic humanism. His early work (up to ~1985) reveals the young artist's inner turmoil and philosophical reflections on the human condition. In the mature period (from ~1985-2000), Skudutis increasingly chooses themes of the city landscape and human everyday life. The following themes appear in his paintings:Motifs of Vilnius - the courtyards, streets, facades, balconies of the Old Town; Man in the city space - figures between buildings, in cafés, in windows; Lighter colouring - dark palettes are replaced by brown, greenish, yellowish, grey tones, conveying the atmosphere and time. Recent works show a subtle spiritual light and reflective calm.
His works are held in the Lithuanian Art Museum, the MO Museum, private collections in Lithuania and abroad.
