Legion.
Twelve scenes. (1st ed.). Kraków 1900. Published by the author. Printed at the Jagiellonian University Press. 8, pp. 1–126, front cover of the paperback preserved, period cloth binding with a Krakow ribbon on the front of the binding.
A piece with an exceptionally interesting provenance, originating from the family library of Helena Wyspiańska (1895–1971), daughter of Stanisław Wyspiański. On the title page, as well as on pp. 25 and 57 and the last two pages, there are stamped seals bearing her signature “H. Wyspiańska.” The text contains several handwritten corrections to the printer’s proofs, including on pp. 9, 11, 48, 85, 87, and 93; particularly interesting is the correction on p. 9, made with a fine pen and grayish-sepia ink. Its style (a capital “A” with serifs) may indicate the author’s intervention, though the lack of sufficient samples does not allow for an unequivocal attribution of this correction to Wyspiański’s hand. On the inside cover, there is a small purple stamp reading “Mianowska – [fleuron] – Aleksandra, ” most likely associated with Aleksandra Mianowska, who worked after the war at Stefan Kamiński’s antiquarian bookstore in Kraków. The piece is bound in a later, characteristic Kraków-style binding: linen cloth, with a vertical red border featuring a floral motif on the front cover; the upper edges of the pages are gilded; the original paperback cover is also preserved; the title page is missing. Good condition. Inside the binding, a slip of paper with a bookseller’s note, likely dating from around 2015, has been preserved: “First edition, copy signed by the author’s daughter,” with a pencil annotation by Łukasz Walczy: “Helena Wyspiańska 1895–1971” and his annotation: “Purchased from Krzyżanowski at 1 św. Jana St., on August 20, 2015—ŁW.” An exceptionally valuable piece of the first edition of *Legion*, distinguished by its direct provenance from Stanisław Wyspiański’s daughter, preserved textual corrections, and an interesting, multigenerational history of ownership. This combination of features gives the piece special collector’s and documentary value.
