Dmitry Sergeyevich Merezhkovsky was a Russian writer, poet, literary critic, historian, philosopher, and translator of the Silver Age, and one of the first figures of Russian Symbolism. During the 1905 Revolution, he sided with the revolutionaries, which led to persecution by the tsarist authorities and, as a result, forced him to emigrate to Paris. After the Bolshevik Revolution, he was once again forced to flee—first to Poland, and subsequently to Paris, where he began vigorous anti-Bolshevik activities, for which his works were banned and withdrawn from circulation. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, but his support for Hitler prevented him from receiving it. He was not rehabilitated in Russia until after 1990.
The work offered here is a now-classic biography of the emperor.
