INTRODUCTORY WORD: "It may not be the time for humor today, but our hosts, the English, show us with their daily lives that a smile is never a crime, even in moments full of tragedy. In life, as in a Shakespearean tragedy, scenes of deep seriousness are sometimes mixed with the grotesque - such is the fate of this world. This collection of cheerful excerpts from our literature is unpretentious and simple. However, it will give the reader not only moments of relaxation and merriment that are so difficult to find today, but also a glimpse of Old Polish customs with all their finesse of tradition and rubbishiness of the nobility."
