This extraordinary portrait from 1909 depicts the famous Russian ballerina Tamara Platonovna Karsavinova (1885-1978), who was one of the most prominent figures of the Tsarist ballet and the early era of the Ballets Russes. Viktor Stretti, a Czech painter with a fine feeling for the psychology of the portrait, has captured here a young artist in an elegant white costume with a distinctive hat and a feather ornament, seated in a studio interior.The composition combines decorative richness with a soft impressionist handwriting and a strong color harmony. Stretti's preoccupation with the modern female type and the cosmopolitan cultural world is clearly reflected in the work.
