Prominent artist, founder of the 1st and 2nd Cracow Group in the early 1960s, fish appears as a painting material in his work. Stern was an avid angler and often organized recreational trips on the San River. Fascinated by the appearance of the fish, he wanted to memorialize it in painting. He replaced its biological life with life in art. The contemplation of nature embodied in his paintings also made deep sense in his philosophical reflections on life, death, transience and memory. His collage series with fish was a rarity in the work of European artists.
