LT.7070 - DT.2467 - RIG.224d - IDF CAR 8; Bronze - 3.95 g - 16 mm - 9 h
MP specimen No. 122 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises,” by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit—acquired from Y. Cellard in 2003.
The obverse is slightly short, with a complete reverse but a slightly off-center obverse. It has a pleasant, dark green, lustrous patina. Condition: Very Good to Superb / Very Good.
The PIXTILOS series is classified in the *Nouvel Atlas* as part of the “PIXTILOS and TITIVS peri-Aulerci group.” Highly Romanized, this series is said to be “better represented among the Aulerci Eburovices than among the Carnutes.” The origin is thought to be south of the Seine, from the Carnutes-Eburovices border to the coast, and these bronzes may have come from several workshops (see *Nouvel Atlas*, Vol. II, p. 114). B. Foucray, for his part, maintains the attribution to the Carnutes, associating them with the CATAL bronzes. He distinguishes these “widely distributed” bronzes into two groups based on weight (heavy for four classes and light for the others). Our bronze corresponds to CAR-8, classified as a light bronze. For the 67 specimens studied to date, the average weight is 3.12 g. Here again, the provenances do not allow us to “form a clear opinion regarding the workshop responsible for this issue.” It should be noted that “the limited distribution along the Lower Seine Valley, however, allows us to rule out a workshop in the northern part of the civitas.”
