A small silver diobol of Klazomenai, dated to 480–400 BC.
Klazomenai, situated on the coast of Asia Minor opposite the island of Chios, is well attested in ancient sources, including Herodotus and Thucydides, as well as in the archaeological record. In the 5th century BC, the city maintained an active minting tradition, producing both larger denominations and small silver fractions intended for everyday circulation.
The obverse depicts the protome of a winged boar facing right, a motif that ranks among the most characteristic iconographic types of Klazomenai. The winged boar appears consistently in the city’s coinage throughout the 5th century BC.
