John II Casimir, Ducat 1658 DL, Gdańsk
Obverse:
A bust of John II Casimir Vasa in right-side profile, wearing a crown and armor (with one shoulder bare) and draped in a cloak. On his chest, a chain bearing the Order of the Golden Fleece.
In the rim, an inscription divided at the top by a crown: IOH CAS D G REX POL & SUEC M D L R P
Reverse:
Two lions support an oval shield bearing the coat of arms of Gdańsk. Above the shield is a wreath of rosettes with a five-leaf sprig. Beneath the lions’ paws are the initials D–L (Daniel Lesse—lessee of the Gdańsk mint from 1656 to 1685). Below the shield is a decorative console.
In the rim: MON AUREA CIVITAT GEDANENS 1658
A variant inscription with the title IOH CAS … SUEC M D L R P in the rim on the obverse and … GEDANENS in the rim on the reverse.

Slightly bent. A beautifully struck and preserved piece. Beautiful detail. Luster and mint mirror finish. Despite the slight bend, this is a beautiful collector’s coin.
