Fritz LATTKE (Fryco LATK).
1895 Neundorf - 1980 Weimar
Lusatian-German painter, printmaker, illustrator. One of the most significant German landscape painters of the 20th century. He came from a poor peasant family. Thanks to a scholarship in 1910, he began studying at the Berlin Kunstgewerbeschule. Mobilized in 1914, he fought on the eastern and western fronts. From 1921-29 he studied at the Weimar Academy of Fine Arts with Walther Klemm and Alexander Olbricht. He gained a reputation as a talented illustrator and caricaturist. After trips to the Czech Republic and Yugoslavia, he settled in Weimar in 1932. He regularly went on plein air trips to Lusatia. He painted muddy paths and flooded fields. His paintings exude a melancholic, poetic mood. He developed his own style with a sensitive color palette.
