signed and dated p.d.: [ under the line ] Witold - K. 1971
In 1955 he graduated from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts (he was a student of Eugeniusz Arct, Wojciech Fangor and Henryk Tomaszewski). Since 1964 he lived in France, and since 1968 in the United States. The artist creates paintings, wall paintings, prints, sculptures and photographs. Initially he created abstract works. Kaczanowski has had many solo exhibitions, and through an exhibition held in Warsaw (2004) his work was reminded to Polish viewers. In July 2007, Sotheby`s Auction House organized a retrospective exhibition of the artist`s works in Amsterdam.
The featured painting depicts human figures, characteristic of the artist`s work, shown in a simplified, slightly geometric manner (reduced to a plastic sign) against an abstract background. The dark space (of an opening or a door) often appears in his paintings, which can be interpreted as an eschatological motif.
