This painting was painted around 1915. The artist captures one of the daily rituals prevalent in his Calvary Arcadia. Afternoon reading in the comfort of a modest wooden bungalow that provides shelter from the summer heat. Lush nasturtium shoots with orange and yellow flowers climb the gazebo structure. We get the impression that there is a blissful silence all around, interrupted only by birdsong and the sound of scythes sharpening from the fields during the harvest. Next to the gazebo grows a slender tree, whose leafy branches spill a pleasant chill. The artist's wife, reading a book of poetry, doesn't even know that her husband is just capturing the moments of her carefree reading with his brush.
At this point it is worth quoting a passage from Weiss' notes, which best captures the prevailing mood of summer siesta:
I am lying in the gazebo, summer day, weather
Hot - the orchard is blushing with apples
Boughs bend pregnant to the ground,
Pears and apple trees - A young girl
Raspberries are serving, - fresh as water,
[...]
The blue sky through the green shines through
The scents of roses and apples, excites the senses.
Painter I am my inspiration.
