Jadwiga Smosarska [1898-1971] - Polish theater and film actress. She starred in 26 Polish films, but appeared more often on the stage of the capital's theaters, acting in a total of 40 different plays. The cinema brought her such great popularity that she was considered by many people (both audiences and critics) to be the biggest star of Polish pre-war cinema, winning many popularity polls. In 1932, after her role in The Duchess of Lowicz, people from America became interested in her. Jadwiga turned down a lucrative contract at one of Hollywood's leading studios because she refused to agree to leave Poland for an extended period of time. In 1938 she was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit: "in recognition of services rendered in the field of propagation of Polish film culture." She rests in the Alley of the Deserving at Warsaw's Powązki Cemetery. [based on source: https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jadwiga_Smosarska]
