Lapis lazuli box, Grand Tour souvenir, France, 19th century
Lapis lazuli, glass, gold, brass: 6.5 x 4 x 3 cm
The box dates from the mid-19th century. Its form is typical of French art of that period; similar boxes were prized souvenirs brought back from the so-called Grand Tour—journeys undertaken across Europe by young people from aristocratic and/or wealthy families, intended to complement their education.
Condition: very good (the side panels have been replaced with glass instead of stone, and the legs have been replaced with coral. These alterations were made in the past and also hold historical value).
