An atmospheric winter landscape by Alfred Świeykowski, an outstanding Polish-French painter associated with the Parisian art salons at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The work depicts an Alpine landscape of Upper Savoy—with the white of the snow contrasted by the cool blues of the mountain ridges and the strong outlines of dark pine trees in the foreground.
The composition is rendered in the Impressionist style—with distinct impasto, a vibrant palette, and a free treatment of space and light. Typical of Świeykowski are the rhythmic horizontal divisions and the soft combinations of blues, browns, and creamy whites.
