Lot information
The painting is an exceptional example of Art Nouveau landscape painting, where the emphasis is on the decorative stylization of nature. This square format, which is typical for Art Nouveau, refers to the composition and aesthetics that we can also observe in the works of Gustav Klimt or Carl Moll. As with Klimt and Moll, Kalvoda in this work captures nature not as a realistic view, but as a harmonious pattern of lines and colors. The depiction of a birch grove with significant use of light and shadow creates an almost ornamental character that evokes a sense of calm and well-being, typical of art nouveau painting. Here, Kalvoda perfectly follows the Art Nouveau principles and depicts the landscape not only as a place, but as an emotional and aesthetic experience.
