Cornelis Schut ( 1597 - 1655), attributed to
THE HOLY FAMILY WITH SAINT ANNA
Based on the painting in the Prado in Madrid (115 x 90 cm, no. 1639), this work depicts the Holy Mother of God with her breast uncovered and the Christ Child standing on her lap. Behind him is St Anne, smiling softly and wearing a velum-like headscarf. On the right, in front of an architectural set piece, Joseph rests his head on his hand. The painting in the Prado was selected by Velazquez for the "Salas de los Capitulos" in the Escorial and was judged by Padre de los Santos at the end of the 17th century as "Lo mejor que hay en esta Casa al sentir de muchos". Oil on canvas. 123 x 103 cm.
