Giovanni Antonio Peruzzini (1643-1724) , Monks by the Fireplace

This fine 18th-century genre and historical interior scene, cataloged as Lot 93 in the historic 1969 Dorotheum auction, depicts a group of monastics gathered around a glowing hearth. Executed with the characteristic theatricality and atmospheric depth of Giovanni Antonio Peruzzini, the composition captures an intimate narrative moment within a dimly lit monastic interior.

The painting is structured around a dramatic diagonal light source emanating from the roaring fireplace on the left, casting stark highlights and long, deep shadows across the stone floor and architectural elements. Peruzzini expertly handles chiaroscuro, illuminating the expressive faces, hands, and coarse cowled habits of the monks. A small domestic cat sits near the hearth, adding a realistic genre touch to the otherwise contemplative scene. The rapid yet controlled brushwork and rich tonal harmony reflect the traditions of the Italian Baroque and the stylistic lineage shared with Marco Ricci.
