August Heinrich Ewers, Heinz Ewers (Wismar 1817–1885 Düsseldorf) was a German painter associated with the Düsseldorf School. In 1836, Ewers began studying sculpture at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. At the same time, he worked as a draftsman and furniture designer, and also created patterns for fabrics and wallpaper. In Düsseldorf, he made a name for himself as a painter. There, beginning in 1861, he was a member of the Malkasten artists’ association and a close friend of the historical and genre painter Hermann Becker. He created numerous genre scenes, portraits, interior scenes, and seascapes. Around 1864, Ewers met Maria von Weerth. In 1869, they married and moved into a house at Immermannstrasse 22. In 1871, his son Hanns Heinz Ewers was born, who later became a poet and writer, known primarily as an author of horror and thriller literature.
