The painting depicts a rarely depicted story, the baptism of Lydia by Paul, which is told in the Acts of the Apostles (16, 14-15). Lydia, a purple merchant, took Paul and his companion Silas into her home and had herself and the members of her household baptised. Lydia, dressed in a red robe (an allusion to her profession), kneels in the centre on a cushion with her hands folded in prayer and receives the baptismal water that Paul pours over her head. Silas has handed the jug of holy water to Paul on a basin. Members of the household attend the baptism on the left and right. Oil on canvas , 75 x 94 cm .
