Horizontally arranged painting depicting a vast rural landscape. In the foreground one can see a sandy winding road leading deep into the composition. On its sides stretch fields in shades of gold and ochre. In the center of the composition is a small village building: a house with light-colored walls and a dark, steep roof, as well as haystacks with soft, rounded shapes.
The background is a wide horizon with a low building line and delicately outlined architectural forms. Above the whole is a bright, slightly overcast sky, kept in cool tones of blue and gray. The painting is free-form, with visible brushstrokes and softly modeled forms. The painting is framed in a simple molded wood frame with a warm golden brown color. Signature at the bottom (partially obliterated): "Block [...] Velem?, Tekkel?Tekely 1944".
Oil on fiberboard.
Condition as in the photos.
Dimensions: 50 x 31cm,
Frame: 60.5 x 41.5 cm.
The depiction is part of the popular trend in Polish painting of realistic and post-impressionist landscapes, developing particularly intensively in the first half of the 20th century. The motif of the countryside, fields and simple buildings was an important element of the artistic iconography of this period, being an expression of interest in the native landscape and traditional lifestyle.
The manner in which light is guided and the synthetic treatment of forms indicate a familiarity with the painting tendencies characteristic of the artistic circles of interwar Poland. Although the work remains unsigned, its style allows it to be located in the circle of artists associated with the genre landscape trend, where the emphasis was on mood, light and color harmony of the composition.
