Czech-Austrian painter and inventor. Graduate of the Military Technical Academy in Vienna. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague with František Sequens and in Vienna with Hans Canon. Thanks to the support of Archduke Rudolf, he received a scholarship that enabled him to study in Paris, and to travel to Cairo, where he spent the years 1883-87, painting pictures with oriental themes. From 1895, he taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Graz. In 1889 he founded the Salon of the Rejects, from which the Vienna Secession was born. In 1887 he patented a triangle for creating perspective drawings.
