Ryszard Piotrowski
Graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Department of Sculpture
(1971-1976), assistant at the Department of Sculpture (1976-1981)
Author of monuments, outdoor sculptures, but also small intimate sculptural forms
I work in marble, wood, metal, ceramics, silver.
"I have always been fascinated by the works of the old masters, not only the final artistic expression, but also the technique of opposing the material of sculpture or painting to perfection. Of course, sculptors are closest to me. I admire such mastery over matter when hard stone or wood becomes plastic and soft, subordinated to the idea of the creator. This is what I strive for. My intention is not only to create beautiful things, but to confront the genius of the artists of the past, to confront perfect sculptures. I don't run away from being inspired by other great works, this is how Picasso worked, among others, processing "Portrait of Infanta Margaret" painted by Velazquez.
The process of inspiration and creation of my works is very different. Many times I have an idea for a sculpture and create several sketches before I start work. Other times it is the concept that arises on its own, evolving as I create. At other times, I am inspired by the material, setting the mood to create a given form. Sometimes reality influences the artist's work, and sometimes the artist influences reality, adding his element to it. Communing with matter interests me, especially that moment when I manage to bend it to my will. There are times when I find the working process itself more fascinating, what emotions I put into it while working, than the final product. I always look at my works through the emotions that accompany their creation.
I work in different materials and with different techniques. Each material requires a different approach. Working in clay and other modeling materials is like painting with oil paints, because you can always touch up something, correct it, change it, paint another layer of oil paints. Working in stone is like painting with watercolors or creating Japanese graphics, because one careless move and all the work is for naught, you just can't improve the stone. It resembles stepping on brittle ice.
On top of that, the structure of the mineral is not always predictable. Working in stone is extremely difficult and therefore fascinating Sculpting begins with "inscribing" the imagined shape into a lump of marble. The sculpture has to be fit into the outline of the stone, and then the excess unnecessary matter is laboriously removed. But the material in which I work doesn't matter much to me, what is important is the perfection of the workmanship, I often return to works that I considered already finished, I always find something to improve. I constantly strive for perfection."
