Biography
She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków in the second half of the 1960s and, in the early 1970s, also from the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Poznań. She took classes in painting with Prof. Stanisław Teisseyre and in artistic textiles with Prof. Magdalena Abakanowicz. In the 1980s, she began her professional career as a faculty member at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. She led the Artistic Textiles Studios at the Department of Painting, and in 2009 she was awarded the title of professor of fine arts, specializing in artistic textiles. Lilla Kulka’s work lies at the intersection of various media. In the early 2000s, transmedia reliefs combining fabric with metal began to appear in her body of work (including the series “Wall of Mystery” and “Interference”). Another recurring motif in Kulka’s work is the human figure—through which the artist explores spatial relationships and establishes a dialogue with space.
