Leopold Gottlieb (1879–1934) —a painter and printmaker of Jewish descent, born in Drohobych. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under Jacek Malczewski, as well as in Munich and Paris. He was associated with the École de Paris and was friends with artists such as Eugeniusz Zak, Mojżesz Kisling, and Elie Nadelman. Gottlieb’s work is distinguished by its lyrical narrative, synthetic drawing, subtle color palette, and frequent exploration of religious, feminine, and symbolist themes. In the 1920s, he exhibited at prestigious galleries in Europe and the United States. He died tragically in 1933 in Paris.
