Salvador Dali's "Suite Papillon" series, Normandy 1969, is a series of works created by the artist for the French national railroad SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français). The works were intended to promote train travel to various regions of France.
The series consisted of six color lithographs and heliogravures, each depicting a different region of France, with butterflies ("papillon" means butterfly in French) as the main motif. Butterflies in Dali's work often symbolized transformation, transience and beauty.
The works in "Suite Papillon" are characterized by Dalí's typical surrealist style, combining precise drawing with fantastic and symbolic elements. On each work one can find the artist's characteristic motifs, such as soft clocks, optical illusions or peculiar figures, incorporated into landscapes referring to a particular region.
The works in this series are prized by collectors and lovers of Dali's art because of their unique character, their combination of commercial and artistic purpose, and the master's typical imagination and technique. The Normandy motif in this series depicts the region's landscape with surreal elements, including, of course, butterflies.
This work, published by J. Schneider in 1969, was commissioned by SNCF to promote it; It belongs to the "Butterfly Suite" series.
