Translated from French by Wilhelmina Zyndram-Kościałkowska (1844–1926), a writer and translator associated with the Positivist movement, author of short stories and essays on European and American literature. Closely associated with Eliza Orzeszkowa, with whom she made her literary debut with the short story *The Golden Countess*, she also became famous as a translator of English literature, including Charles Dickens’ *David Copperfield *.
