Biography
One of Poland’s most recognizable intuitive painters. At the age of 16, he began working at the “Wieczorek” mine, where he met Ewald Gawlik. A few years later, he joined a circle of amateur artists affiliated with the mine’s cultural center, where he met Teofil Ociepka. From that time on, painting became an important part of his life.
Sówka’s work, like that of other members of the Janów Group, quickly attracted the interest of collectors, including Ludwig Zimmerer. The artist primarily depicted Silesian industrial landscapes, combining them with religious, mystical, and esoteric motifs. Female nudes, symbolizing beauty and divinity, were also a characteristic motif in his works. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions in Poland and abroad, and in 1999, a documentary film dedicated to him, *The Worlds of Erwin Sówka*, was released.
