Priekšmeta apraksts

Tadeusz Ajdukiewicz (Wieliczka 1852-1916)
Portrait of a lady with a medallion, ca. 1880
Oil on canvas (double canvas)
Signed l.d.: Tadeusz Ajdukiewicz
Dimensions: 68 × 55 cm, 78.5 x 65.5 cm
Frame: contemporary, wooden.
Condition: very good; visible local cracks and minor retouch; canvas slightly wavy in upper part.

Intimate, realistic portrait of an unknown lady shown against a dark, neutral background. The model faces slightly in three-quarter view, with a soft, gentle smile and a calm gaze directed toward the viewer. Attention is drawn to a finely rendered necklace with an oval medallion - a detail of great aesthetic and symbolic value, perhaps containing a miniature image. The artist has depicted the texture of the materials with great precision: the softness of the velvet of the dress, the lace edge of the collar and the shine of the gold. The painterly technique betrays high craftsmanship, typical of Ajdukiewicz in the mature period of his work.
The painting can be stylistically situated in the circle of portraits created in the 1870s and 1880s - a period when the artist successfully developed his career in Warsaw, Vienna and other European centers.

Tadeusz Ajdukiewicz
- one of the most outstanding Polish portraitists and painters of battle scenes of the 19th century. He was born in Wieliczka in 1852 or 1853. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Cracow (from 1868), and then at the academies in Vienna and Munich.
He made numerous artistic trips to Constantinople, Egypt, Syria, the Balkans and Russia, among others. In 1879 he created portraits of famous Warsaw singers and actresses, and from the 1880s he was active in Vienna and London, where he gained prestige as a painter of the aristocracy.
In 1893 he produced a portrait of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII. His work combined academic realism with a love of detail, especially in portrait, military and oriental paintings. He died in Krakow in 1916.
Ajdukiewicz's works are in the collections of the National Museum in Krakow, Lviv, Warsaw and Lviv, among others, as well as in many private collections at home and abroad.
