Emil Lindeman (Warsaw 1864 – Ozorków near Łódź 1945 /?/) began his painting studies in Warsaw at Wojciech Gerson’s Drawing Class (until 1887), later (1888–1890) he studied at the Kraków School of Fine Arts under Jan Matejko; under Matejko’s guidance, he also worked on the polychrome decoration of St. Mary’s Church. He subsequently continued his studies in Paris. For his painting *Plac Zamkowy* (Castle Square), sent from there in 1893, he received first prize in a competition held by *Tygodnik Ilustrowany*. He traveled to Naples, Rome, and St. Petersburg. From 1897 onward, he lived permanently in Warsaw. He painted landscapes, genre scenes, seascapes, flowers, and still lifes. He designed posters and illustrated books and magazines. He also worked on mural painting (including the polychrome decoration of the presbytery of the cathedral in Kielce) and the restoration of old frescoes (including those in the Church of St. Teresa in Vilnius, St. Anne’s Church in Warsaw, and the White House in Łazienki Park).
