Léger—a French Cubist painter, printmaker, sculptor, ceramicist, and film director. From 1900 onward, he lived and worked in Paris, and during World War II, he was in exile in the United States.
From around 1910, he developed a distinctive style, creating abstract and semi-abstract works featuring cylindrical forms. He reduced the human figure to a pure form. Mechanical forms are a constant element of his work, for example in his designs for the Swedish Ballet (1921–1922), frescoes (such as the polychrome decoration of the Stadium in Brussels, 1935), and the abstract film *Ballet mécanique* (1924) with music by Georges Antheil.
His student, assistant since 1948, and wife since 1952 was Nadia Léger, formerly known as Wanda Chodasiewicz-Grabowska.
